Watch an exciting race of men, women, and their burros, with the participants leading, coaxing, and pulling their trusty and often stubborn burros to the summit of Mosquito Pass, and then back to the center of Leadville! The burro races are a tribute to the frontier miners, whose livelihood depended on their burros, to haul equipment and grub up to the mines. Burros in this race carry packs weighing 35 pounds each, and are led - not ridden - by a 15 foot rope to the summit of Mosquito Pass at an elevation of 13,183 feet and back to Leadville over a 21 mile long course. Put up your money and "buy" the winning team at the "Burro Race Calcutta" auction. For specific event times and locations, see the For more information or to register for this event
